SHOP 'n DONATES MORE THAN $129,000 TO THE MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY ASSOCIATION
For The 19th Consecutive Year, Independent Retailers Sold Shamrocks In-Store, Hosted Annual Golf Outing to Raise Funds
PITTSBURGH July 20, 2017, SHOP 'n SAVE®, the independently owned and operated grocery chain with more than 100 stores in Western Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York, Ohio and West Virginia, wrapped-up its yearly fundraising efforts benefitting the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) on Monday, July 17. The fundraising year drew to a close with the 19th Annual SHOP 'n SAVE Walter Knopp Golf Classic at Edgewood Country Club. As a result of the retailers collective fundraising efforts, both in-store and at the golf outing, SHOP 'n SAVE was able to donate $129,763 to the MDA in the fight against muscle debilitating diseases, increasing donations by 6.4 percent from the previous year. Over the last 19 years, the annual golf outing has raised over $1.5 million dollars to help find a cure for muscle debilitating diseases.
The annual golf outing was named in honor of the late Walter Knopp, a beloved member of the SHOP 'n SAVE family who rose through the ranks in the grocery business, from stock boy to owner of three SHOP 'n SAVE store locations; Heidelberg, Century Square and South Fayette. Knopp, who suffered from ALS and passed in 2004, is honored through the annual golf outing that now bears his name.
From February 13 through March 18, SHOP 'n SAVE sold paper shamrock cut-outs in-store to advance treatment and cures of muscle debilitating diseases, provide access to MDA care centers across America and help send kids with Muscular Dystrophy to summer camp.
The New Castle SHOP 'n SAVE sold the most shamrocks in-store for the second consecutive year with $3,127 raised. As a result of these efforts, storeowner Dan Falcone was the recipient of the MDA Achievement Award and was presented with a trophy at the SHOP 'n SAVE Walter Knopp Golf Classic on July 17.
I am fortunate to be able to work with our independent retailers each year in the fight against muscle debilitating diseases," said Don Fabian, SHOP 'n SAVE Senior Merchandiser. Their unwavering commitment to this cause has helped us surpass our fundraising goals and shine a spotlight on the incredible work the MDA is doing. We couldn't do it without them."
